A little help for your practice

Music Score is a reader and piano player for pop lead sheets and simple piano notation. Open the player, bring a score, and make some music.

Start practicing

1. Export a MusicXML or compressed MXL file from your notation app, or use a JSON file previously exported by Music Score.
2. In the player, choose Open or Choose a score. You can also drop one file onto the page.
3. Press Play to hear the score. Your first tap enables audio in the browser.
4. Open More to adjust practice tempo, count-in, metronome, time grid, chord symbols, or the piano keyboard. Pause before changing tempo.
5. Use Reader for pages, or Player to follow playback. Export a copy before closing the page if you need it later.

Supported files

Open .musicxml, .xml, .mxl, or .json. JSON must use the Music Score document format, version 0.1.0 or 0.2.0; arbitrary JSON, MIDI, scanned images and PDF imports are not supported. PDF is available as an export.

The reader supports notes, chords, rests, ordinary triplets, ties, fingering, multiple fixed-staff voices, pickups, harmony, changes at bar boundaries, and simple counted repeats. MusicXML must use score-partwise format.

Some notation features are outside this app's scope: lyrics, grace notes, slurs, ornaments, articulations, pedal and dynamic directions, cross-staff voices, microtones, first and second endings, and D.C./D.S./Coda navigation. A score containing these may be rejected. Export a simplified practice excerpt in your notation app; Music Score does not silently remove unsupported music.

Page layout, beaming, fonts and other engraving details are regenerated. An import may include a note about these presentation changes. Read import diagnostics before practicing. If a replacement file is invalid, your previous score remains open.

Browser file limits are 4 MiB for JSON, 8 MiB for XML, and 16 MiB for MXL. MXL contents are also limited to 16 MiB total and 8 MiB per entry. Parsing runs in a separate browser worker; you can cancel an import, and an import taking more than 15 seconds is stopped. Large scores may still be slow on older phones. Try a shorter excerpt if needed.

Player controls

• Press Play or Pause to control playback. A count-in helps you start together with the piano.
• Click a note to hear it. Use the playback position slider to seek through the score.
• With the playback slider focused, arrow keys move through the grid; Home and End move to the beginning and end.
• In More, adjust the practice tempo, metronome, count-in and visible piano keyboard. Changing practice tempo does not rewrite your score's tempo.
• Playback needs a browser that supports Web Audio. If you hear nothing, check your device volume and output, then press Play again.

Reader controls

• Switch to Reader for printable pages. Use the page buttons, or focus the score and use the left and right arrow keys.
• Swipe to turn pages at 100% zoom. Double-tap to cycle through 100%, 150% and 200%; drag to explore while zoomed in.
• In More, choose A4 or Letter, portrait or landscape, and your preferred zoom and time-grid settings.

Save and export

Open More, choose PDF, MusicXML or JSON, and select Export. The browser saves the file directly from your device.

JSON is the best format for reopening a score in Music Score because it preserves the document's written structure and identities. Reader and playback settings are temporary and are not saved in the document.

MusicXML exchanges supported music with notation apps. Explicit playback routes are exported in playing order; it is not a lossless copy of the original source file or an exact application save format. PDF exports printable notation with embedded fonts.

Privacy

Files are opened and processed on your device. The website does not upload your score, send it to the Music Score MCP service, or save it in a server library. Practice and export work in your browser. No account is required.

Scores and practice settings stay in memory and are cleared when you reload or leave the page. This site does not store them in browser storage or use analytics cookies. Save a JSON copy if you want to reopen the score later. Your original file is never changed.

Loading the website downloads its app files, fonts and sounds. As with any website, the hosting service processes basic connection information to deliver those files. This is separate from your score, which stays local.

Credits

Piano sound uses Salamander Grand Piano by Alexander Holm under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0. The bundled recordings are unmodified; playback resamples, pitch-shifts and adjusts gain. No endorsement is implied.

Metronome sounds use soft woodblock and medium woodblock recordings by hollandm under CC0. They are converted to mono, trimmed, faded and gain-adjusted.

Fonts include Inter by Rasmus Andersson, and Bravura and Academico by Steinberg, under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Full font notices and sound credits are available in More → Credits in the player.
